Why was Launch Excel created?

Hi, my name is Victor. Let me tell you a bit about myself and why I created Launch Excel.

I have used Excel since 2002 in various finance roles. My Excel know-how comes from books, blogs, forum posts and a healthy dose of trial and error. I love learning about Excel and have taken many different learning paths, some with greater success than others.

In early 2011, I asked myself the question, “What is the best way to learn Excel?” and set out to help others answer that question for themselves. You can read my article about different ways to learn Excel by clicking here.

When I started out using Excel I didn’t have a map showing me what to learn or what was possible with Excel. My first couple of months with Excel, I used it as a place to record text, do some simple sums, work with data in tables and plot a few charts.

When I watched experienced users, I saw that they were doing things faster and more effectively than I was. I started to copy their formulas and charts, sometimes well and other times poorly.

As I gained more experience I got quicker by learning keyboard and mouse shortcuts. By the way, if you’re interested in doing things faster in Excel, I have a collection of articles in my Tips and Tricks section which you can access here.

I do countless Google searches for Excel-related topics. Some of the material is great, other material not so good – even when it appears high up in Google search listings. I also read books, useful in places but difficult to follow alongside a live Excel spreadsheet.

Holding open a thick reference book while typing in a formula to follow a long example, while trying not to lose which page you’re on, is hardly my idea of easy or enjoyable!

While I don’t consider myself an Excel guru, I do love learning about Excel and would like to share my knowledge with you. I’ll do that through video, audio, articles, mind maps and anything else I can think of.

That’s why I created Launch Excel – to help you get better at using Excel!
